Election or co-option?
The first notice does not invite applications for co-option. It gives electors the opportunity to require an election. The two routes are separate and happen in sequence.
Election
If ten electors make a valid request by the deadline and in the manner stated in the formal notice, the Returning Officer must arrange an election. Candidates use the formal nomination process and, if more than one person is nominated, eligible electors vote.

If no valid election request is received, the Returning Officer confirms that the Town Council may proceed. The Council must then fill the seat by co-option as soon as practicable, unless the vacancy arises within the final six months before the ordinary election.

- Appointment recordedThe successful applicant signs the declaration of acceptance of office, completes the register-of-interests process and is announced in a published outcome notice.
